Job Chapter 1

A long time ago in the land of Uz there lived a man named Job. He was a good man who feared the Lord and would have nothing to do with evil. He had a large family with seven sons and three daughters and was very wealthy with large flocks of sheep, herds of camels, oxen and donkeys. Job employed many servants and was in fact the richest man in all of Uz.
Now it was the custom among Job's sons that upon each of their birthdays they would invite their brothers and sisters to their homes for a celebration. So it was that when these days of feasting and drinking had run their course Job would summon all his children to him to sanctify them. Rising early in the morning he would pray to the Lord and offer up a burnt offering unto the Lord on behalf of each of them, for he said, “Perhaps my sons have sinned and turned away from the Lord in their hearts”. This was Job's regular practice.
One day, as the angels came to present themselves before the Lord, Satan the adversary came with them. "Where have you come from?" the Lord inquired of Satan. “From going to and fro across the earth, from walking back and forth upon it,” Satan replied. Then the Lord said to Satan, “Have you noticed my servant Job for there is none like him on all the earth, for he is blameless and upright, a good man who fears God and stays away from evil?” Satan scoffed, “Why shouldn't he fear and respect God when all you have done is bless him? Look at how rich he is, you have protected him and his entire household from all harm and you have prospered everything he has set his hand to, but just take away his earthly possessions and surely he will curse you to your face.” So the Lord responded to Satan, "You may do what you like with his wealth, but you are not to harm him physically." So Satan went out from the presence of the Lord.
Now there came a day when Job's sons were eating and drinking in their oldest brother's home when disaster struck.
A messenger rushed to Job and said, "The oxen were plowing with the donkeys feeding beside them when the Sabeans raided. They have taken away the animals, indeed they have killed all your servants and I alone have escaped to tell you."
While he was still speaking another servant arrived and said, "The fire of God has fallen from heaven and has burned up all your sheep and herdsmen and I alone have escaped to tell you".
Before he had finished speaking still another arrived and said, "Three bands of Chaldeans have raided, they have taken all the camels and killed all the servants and I alone have escaped to tell you.
"While he was still speaking another arrived with more tragic news, "Job, your sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother's home when suddenly a great wind came across the wilderness and struck the four corners of the house causing it to collapse upon the young people. They are all dead, and I alone have escaped to tell you."
Then Job arose in anguish and tore his robe and shaved his head and fell down upon the ground before the Lord.
"Naked came I from my mother's womb and naked shall I return, the Lord gave me all that I have and they were his to take away. Blessed be the name of the Lord".
In all of this Job did not sin or accuse God of any wrong.

Job Chapter 2

Now again there came a day when the angels came to present themselves before the Lord and Satan was with them. "Where have you come from?" the Lord asked Satan. "From going to and fro across the earth, from walking back and forth upon it." Then the Lord said to Satan, "Have you observed my servant Job, for there is none like him on all the earth, for he is blameless and upright, a good man who fears God and stays away from evil? And still he hold fast to his faith in me despite the fact you incited me to destroy him without cause." So Satan answered the Lord, "Skin for skin, yes all that a man has he will give for his life, but stretch out your hand and strike him with sickness and he will surely curse you to your face." So the Lord said to Satan, "Behold he is in your hand, but spare his life."
So Satan went out from the presence of the Lord and struck Job with painful boils, from the soles of his feet to the crown of his head. Then Job took a broken piece of pottery to scrape himself and sat in the midst of ashes.
It was at this time that Job's wife came to him and said, "Do you still hold fast to your faith in God after all of this? Curse God and die!" But he said to her, "You speak like a heathen woman. Shall we only receive what is good from God and not accept adversity?"
So in all of this Job said nothing wrong, he committed no sin against God.
Now Job had three friends, Eliphaz, Bildad, and Zophar. When they heard of all the tragedy that had befallen Job, they traveled together to be at his side, to mourn with him and offer him comfort. When they saw Job, he was so changed in appearance by all of his suffering, they could scarcely recognize him. Crying out in despair they wept and tore their robes and each of them sprinkled dust on his head and towards heaven to demonstrate their deep sorrow.
So they set down with him upon the ground, for seven days and seven nights, and no one spoke a word for they saw that his grief was too great for words.
