Lyrics
Job Chapter 23
Then Job answered and said,
“Even now my complaint is as bitter as ever. I have found no comfort, my suffering is far more than I can bear. Oh that I knew where I could find God that I might come before Him and reason with Him. To present my case before Him, to argue my side of this issue. Then I would savor the words he spoke unto me and I would be filled with revelation and understanding, all of this would make sense to me at last. Would He devastate me with his great presence? No, but He would be full of mercy, tender towards me, renewing my strength.
The righteous are ever welcomed before the Lord my God, but I search in vain. Both forward and backward, north and south, but I cannot find him. But he knows every detail of my life and when I have passed through this trial He will know me and pronounce me innocent, as pure as gold. I have stayed the course of the Lord my God. I have followed his steps and not turned aside. I have not departed from the commands of his lips, but have treasured them in my heart. But His mind concerning me is made up and who can turn Him from His intentions. What He desires He does. For God will complete what He appoints for me, the future is in His hands. Therefore I am terrified of His presence, I am afraid of what He has in store for me. My heart is faint, I am overwhelmed by the Almighty. There is nothing but darkness, thick impenetrable darkness surrounds me.”
Job Chapter 24
“Why knowing times are not hidden from the Almighty? Do the Godly wait in vain for His judgment? For evil men remove landmarks and seize flocks that do not belong to them, even the donkeys of the poor and fatherless are taken. They take the poor widows ox as a pledge for a loan. The needy are kicked aside. They huddle together and hide. Like wild donkeys in the desert they toil for food in the wasteland. For they and their children, they eat what they find in the wilderness and even glean the wicked man's vineyards. All night they lay naked in the cold with no clothes or covering. They are wet with the rain of the mountains and live in caves for shelter. There are those who take the fatherless child from the breast of the mother as a pledge for a loan. They go about naked, hungry, and forced to carry sheaves while starving. They are forced to press out the olive oil without tasting it, to tread the wine press but suffer from thirst. From the city rise the groans of the dying and the souls of the wounded, yet God does not hear their cry. There are those who rebel against the light, who are not acquainted with what is right and good. The murderer rises before dawn to kill the poor and needy and at nightfall he is a thief. The adulterer waits for twilight saying no one will see me and he disguises his face. They break into houses at night and by day they sleep. They do not know the light. For deep darkness is morning to them for they are friends with the terrors of the night.
You say they are swiftly driven from the face of the earth. Everything they own is cursed. Their vineyards lay desolate. As drought and heat consume snow so does Sheol those who have sinned. Even the sinner’s mother forget their children. Worms alone find satisfaction in them, they are quickly forgotten. Wickedness having been broken like a tree. They pray on the childless woman who has no sons to protect them. They turn their backs on the needy widow. Sometimes it seems that God prolongs the life of the mighty and helps them when they despair. He gives them security and strength. With His eyes upon them He helps them in many ways. They are exalted a little while then they are gone. They wither and fade like the mallow leaf. They are cut off like the heads of grain. If it is not so, who can prove me a liar and prove that there is nothing in what I say.”
