Job Chapter 22
Then Eliphaz spoke,
Is a man of any value to God? Even if a man is wise, his only value is to himself. Is it any pleasure to the Almighty that you are righteous? What does God gain if you are blameless? Is it because you are righteous and good that God has brought judgement upon you and is punishing you? No! It is because of your wickedness. Your iniquity is without end. For example, you must have refused to loan money to a needy brother unless he pledged all that he had taking even his clothing, leaving him naked. You must have turned your back on one dying of thirst not even offering but a drink of water. Yes, and withheld even a crust of bread from one faint with hunger. But when it came to the rich and influential, you showed them favor, letting them live wherever they wanted and showering them with favors. You have sent poor widows away empty, with nothing. You must have crushed the hopes of the orphans leaving them crying out in need. That is why God has placed snares around you.
Why you now are suddenly filled with fear and dread? That is why you are surrounded by darkness like one cast into the deep of the ocean. Is not God in the height of the heavens? Observe the stars, how lofty they are. And you say, ‘What does God know? How can he see me and judge me for the evil I have done when he is blinded by darkness when thick clouds obscure his vision of the earth below?’ How long will you keep this up Job? All this wickedness walking in the ways of evil men. Have you forgotten that the wicked are cut down before their time? All trace of them are swept away by a flood of events. They said, ‘We don't need God. Depart from us. For what can the Almighty do anyway?’
They ignored the fact God had filled their homes with good things. (Thank God I have never done the things the wicked do). Yes, the day will come when the righteous will be filled with joy and laugh as the wicked are cut down and the fire of God burns up the last of them. Now Job, be reasonable. Go to God and confess your sins and then you at least will have peace. Then good things will happen to you. Please Job, learn from God. Study his word and treasure it in your heart. If you return to the Almighty, you will be restored. If you get the sin out of your life and give up your lust for gold and riches, then the Almighty will become your treasure, like precious silver. Then you will delight yourself in the Lord. Then when you lift your face to Him and make your request known to Him, He will hear you. And once you do this, you will fulfill all your promises to Him and He will grant your hearts desire. Anything you set your hand to shall prosper and be established. Sunshine and happiness shall surround you. Then when the evil would knock you down you will look up with confidence saying, ‘The Lord will lift me up.’
Yes, God will save the humble, even the guilty will be delivered by the purity of your prayers.”
